BTISNET - Sub-Distributed Information Centre
Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu

Distributed Informatics Sub-Centre at Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Jammu was sanctioned in year 1998-99 by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The centre was made functional in Aug, 1999. It was started as a service providing centre with a minimal manpower. Presently the centre has an established molecular modeling facility and the staff is actively engaged in the in silico research activities pertaining to the mandate of the Institute.
The Sub DIC at IIIM, Jammu has been instrumental in spreading the buzz of Bioinformatics particularly within the state. It has established the state-of-the-art infrastructure for carrying out several Bioinformatics activities including Molecular Modeling. Presently the centre has an established in-silico facility encompassing activities like Molecular Docking, QSAR studies and 3-D structure prediction using Homology Modeling and Threading techniques. The software used to carry out the sophisticated experiments includes Accelrys Discovery Studio, Schrodinger suite, Chemaxon, Hyperchem and several other public domain software. The facility has not only been utilized efficiently within IIIM Jammu but also by other institutions and universities in the state of J&K. The unstinted support from the Department of Biotechnology has definitely introduced a concept in this state for carrying out research in an effective manner.
Major research activities

The centre is actively engaged in research activities of the Institute related to drug designing for cancer and infection. The in silico group closely interacts with the Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology groups of the Institute for developing theoretical models and providing chembioinformatics support for the current research activities of the Institute. Major activities involves virtual screening of compound repositories (within and outside the Institute) against selected targets, 3D structure prediction of bacterial efflux pumps, Molecular docking, QSAR & Pharmacophore modeling studies besides the development of chembioinformatics tools and databases useful for the current research activities of the Institute.
