Andaman and Nicobar Islands the ‘hotspots’ of Biodiversity are virtually a paradise of tropical orchids. Orchids are mysterious in many ways and the incredible shapes and colour of these flowers record their positions as “Botanical Jewels in the Plant Kingdom”. Therefore it is important to document the availability and location of such indigenous orchids in the form of a database. Here, we describe a web database containing information (plant name, type, leaves, inflorescence, flower, fruits, flowering and fruiting period, habitat and distribution) about the indigenous orchids of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The database is available for free in public domain.
Andaman and Nicobar islands have a rich biodiversity too. Approximately 2500 angiospermic species are distributed across the island territory of which, 45 species are used as medicaments by tribals like Great Andamanese, Onge, Shompen and. Around 223 species are endemic to these islands of which, many bear medicinal value. Most of them offer time-tested remedies, which are found to be effective for diseases ranging from common cold to cancer. The antimicrobial activities of a few of them have been explored and authenticated. They require rapid conservation and cataloguing urgently.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands represents one of the richest repositories of biodiversity in the whole of south and south East Asia. These islands are a virtual bio reserve, which is unique both in terms of biodiversity and abundance. Situated between two major biodiversity hot spots, namely the Indian sub continent and the Malaysia- Indonesia region, it is hardly surprising that the islands manifest biodiversity of extraordinary range with in a limited geographical area. The biodiversity of thee islands ranges from medicinal plant resources, indigenous Orchid, agro biodiversity and economically important plant species like timber yielding plants
The Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands consisting of about 293 islands (39 of which are inhabited) is situated in the Bay of Bengal. Andaman group of islands consists of North Andaman, Middle Andaman. South Andaman and Little Andaman besides many smaller islands. Nicobar group of islands comprises Great Nicobar, Car Nicobar, Nan cowry, Katchal and Chowra. The headquarters of this Union Territory is at Port Blair, situated in South Andaman Island. The topography of the islands is hilly & they abound in evergreen forests. Timber is plentiful and of a vast variety. The white sandy beaches have a back drop of luxuriant greenery & in the clear blue waters of the lagoons enclosed by coral reefs is an underwater world full of fish of every possible variety. Here, we describe a web database containing information (Scientific Name, Family, Sub-Family, Order, Class, Fish Base Name, Maximum Size, Environment, Climate, Importance, Resilience, Vulnerability, Distribution, Morphology, Biology, Red List Status and Dangerous) about the Fish Genetic Resources of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The database is available for free in public domain.
An animal genetic resource of Andaman and Nicobar Islands depends directly on genetic, species and eco-system biodiversity for their livelihoods. The animal genetic resources are a vital component of this biodiversity and play an essential role in agricultural economy. This Databases describes a online database containing information of cattle, Buffalo, Goats, Pigs, Rabbit, Poultry, Duck, Quail, Turkey and Guinea fowl. This resource will give complete information about the individual’s species regarding their family, genus and chromosomes number, location, breed and community rearing of the breed.
The reef in North Bay is rich in its biodiversity and has about 62 species of corals falling under 26 genera. The other reef associates include the sponges, sea anemones, echinoderms, mollusks, tunicates, etc. A brief account on each of the members of the aforesaid groups is provided in the ensuring section. A coral, or polyp, lives inside a cup-shaped skeleton that it secretes around itself resembling a sea anemone, a coral is a jelly like sac attached at one end in its skeleton. The open end, the mouth, is fringed with stinging tentacles. A coral feeds by sweeping the water with its tentacles and stunning microscopic prey, which it then draws inside itself. Individual corals that gather together in large colonies are usually under one-eighth inch (3 millimetres) long. Living corals are often beautifully coloured.
An alga is an important component of Marine and Fresh Water Living Resources of Andaman and Nicobar Group of Islands. Algae have a wide application in a variety of Industries such as Food, Fodder Fertilizer etc. They are also important sources of Protein, Iodine, Vitamins, Minerals and Substances of Antibiotic Nature. About 313 fresh water algal species belonging to 15 families and 57 marine algal species belonging to 18 families has included in this database among which 39 species has been found to be endemic.
The verdant Andaman and Nicobar groups of Islands, popularly known as bay Islands, situated more than one thousand kilometers away from any point of mainland India, in the emerald blue waters of the Bay of Bengal, are acynosure for ecologists, representing one of the most fragile tropical island ecosystem. Since about 86% of their geographical area is under forests, the islands have to support ever increasing human and animal population from the rest available land. Despite local populations main sustenance demands being met by imports from mainland India, the pressure on land is ever increasing for resource generation.

An Annotated Protein database for Silkworm and Mulberry : SilkProt is a comprehensive, fully annotated, organism specific database for silkworm proteins. SilkProt was developed with MySQL as back-end and PHP with HTML as front-end. The new updated Silkprot database is modified and developed with dynamic Graphical User Interface (GUI) and its sequence content also is well organized which contains more than 7200 silkworm protein sequences. In future this database will be extended for structure visualization and pathway information of silkworm proteins.
Transcription factors (TF) are the key regulatory proteins that enhance or repress the transcriptional rate of their target genes by binding to the promoter sequence i.e. regulation of gene expression. Identification and classification of TFs provide important resources for researchers especially in the comparative genomics and transcriptional regulation. SilkTF provides the information on transcription factors of silkworm such as domains, regions and e-value detected using Pfam HMM models. All the data are stored in MySQL relational database on a linux server. Queries to the database have been implemented in PHP scripts. It has a simple interface to allow users to browse the database by Sequence ID and domain name of the sequence which are having the TFs.
Mulberry Genome Database  
Extensive Molecular markers data on DNA fingerprints, binary scores, similarity, and dissimilarity index matrices, phylogenetic relationship in terms of dendrogram and marker segregation pattern has been compiled and stored using relational database with Visual Basic Platform
This database provides information about the different types of soils, physical information, physico-chemical properties, primary and secondary micronutrients etc., of various states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, etc. The Front end is developed by using the programming language of HTML, PHP etc. PHP is used for connecting the MySQL database and forms. The login ID and Password has been created for the purpose of submitting the data on line. This database can be updated only by registered members of CSR&TI and its allied units like Regional Sericultural Research Stations and Regional Extension Centres
Database of DNA sequences for important plant genes in mulberry  
A database has been developed for storing and retrieving DNA sequences of important plant genes responsible for yield, quality, diseases and pest resistance and also some of the mulberry specific genes obtained from the public domain. PCR primers for important plant gene sequences has been designed.
Sample Web Application for Analysis of Molecular ID  
DNA fingerprinting of important mulberry varieties and germplasm accessions have been generated by different molecular markers like RAPD, ISSR, SSR, etc. For easy visualization and accurate representation of the fingerprints, a graphical method of display has been developed using HTML and PHP.
A software for estimating the Growth Index in silkworm Bombyx mori has been developed to compare the growth rate of different silkworm breeds and hybrids under varying conditions of nutrition. The application is developed using Visual Basic and MS Access. It will help the scientists of chawki rearing centres and farmers as a ready reckoner to know the optimum growth of different breeds and hybrids

Spices such as black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, ginger, turmeric, nutmeg, garcinia and allspice were used in this study. PASSCOM database includes a total of 852 chemical constituents present in the black pepper (116), cardamom (97), cinnamon (137), clove (132), ginger (42), turmeric (100), nutmeg and mace (112), garcinia (11) and allspice (105).

Spice EST  
Spices EST Annotation Database is consist of two spice like turmeric and ginger EST database and SNP database. It can be accessible through online. EST Data records were downloaded from NCBI open source database. All EST records for curcuma longa and zingiber officinale were mined and stored in MYSQL database. These ESTs were assembled using sequence assembly programme like CAP3. Contigs results were provided in the database. This EST records were separated as a tissue based EST libraries and furthur analysed and the results were stored in the databases.

AgAbDb, a derived knowledge base, archives molecular interactions of protein and peptide antigens characterized by co-crystal structures. The interactions are compiled at two levels, viz. residue level and atomic level.
It is a curated database for complete viral genome sequences. VirGen employs the sequenced-based Bioinformatics approaches to annotate viral genome records and to identify the ‘alternative names’ of viral proteins, where available. It archives the results of comparisons of genomes, proteomes and individual proteins within and between viral species.  
"ViPs" is a relational database of all known protein structures of virus, either experimentally determined using X-ray diffraction/NMR or predicted by homology modelling.
