BTISNET - Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility

  This centre has started operating since August 2007.The first aim of establishing this center in a rural university of West Bengal was to disseminate the idea and knowledge about bioinformatics in the remote corners of southern parts of the state. Since the Inception till date, we have organized 14 workshops from where more than 350 participants have benefitted. The target group of those programs also ranged from undergraduate students to senior college and university teachers of the allied subjects accordingly.

  The center has also started its research activities recently and is making progresses. The center is well equipped with nearly 30 desktop pcs, two servers, one mac pc and other computers and peripherals. Several software suites like sigma plot and enzyme kinetics, Design Expert, Bio-ID, Genius Pro have been acquired. Availability of 1gbps internet facility through campus LAN has also made the works convenient for us.

Major research activities    
The centre, apart from collaborating with different research groups at ICGEB and other institutes, is actively interested to apply and develop bioinformatics tools to study gene regulatory elements in Plasmodium falciparum, rice and other genomes. The centre is also developing prediction tools for lead discovery, based on artificial intelligence algorithms, focusing development of novel antimalarials.Our faculties are actively engaged in research in different aspect of biotechnology. Major fields of research are:-
  • Structural and functional studies of different industrially important enzymes like amylases, keratinases, tannase, chitenase etc.
  • Analysis of biological problems with machine learning methods.
  • Microbial enzyme (amylase, tannase, xylanase, chitinase) production and scale up process.
  • Production of microbial polysaccharides and antibiotics.
  • Biofertilizer production and transfer of technology.
  • Anticancer substances from mashroom.
  • Antioxidant and antidiabetic constitute from medicinal plants.
  • Development of new fish feed.
