BTISNET - Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility
Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) had its beginning as the Post Graduate centre of Sri Venkateswara University in the year 1968. It gained autonomy in the year 1976. SKU is located 9k.m. from anantapur and is well connected by rail and road with metropolitan cities like Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. SKU has facilities for undertaking study and research through well established library, buildings and laboratories.

Biochemistry department of Sri Krishnadevarya University was established in 1985 and grown to occupy a unique place among biochemistry departments of its kind in the southern part of the country. Given its active involvement in research and in creation of infrastructure in Molecular Biology with particular emphasis on Plant and Microbial. The Biochemistry department has received support from UGC, DBT, DST and AICTE to create facilities to conduct modern research in applied areas.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India provided financial support for the establishment of Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) for the promotion of Biology Teaching through Bioinformatics (BTBI) at SKU, Anantapur as central facility, under the Biotechnology Information Network (BTISnet) program. The main objectives of DBT- BIF include supporting the teaching and research activities in the area of Bioinformatics for students of biology and its allied areas of Sciences of SKU and the neighboring institutions. In addition BIF organizes Training programs or Workshops for familiarizing the applications of Bioinformatics in various field of Biology. BIF has High end, Medium end Servers connected to Desktop Systems with OS, Operating and application software’s, Databases and Journals and 2 Mbps broadband internet connectivity

Considered to be the holy grail of modern biology, a solution to the protein folding problem has enormous potentially beneficial impact on society. Prediction of three dimensional structures of drug targets, design of biocatalysts and nanobiomachines are a few of the multitude of foreseeable applications. At DBT-BIF SKU, we have been developing a computational protocol for modeling and predicting protein structures at the atomic level. In addition to this design of a novel drug is one of the biggest challenges faced by the pharmaceutical industry. The use of computers accelerates the process of drug design which is a time intensive process, and also reduces the cost of whole process. Computational methods are used in various forms of drug discovery like QSAR, virtual screening and structure-based drug designing methods. Pursuing the dream that once the gene target is identified and validated drug discovery protocols could be automated using Bioinformatics & Computational Biology tools.

Major research activities    

1. Research Activities
Genomic analysis of M. tuberculosis for Protein targeted Drug Design, Plasmodium falciparum genome analysis for development of anti-malarial drugs and vaccine development using in Silico techniques, Sequence analysis of salt stress genes in ground nut and fox-tail millets, Sequence analysis of genes involved in degradation of pesticides, Proteomic approach and studies on salt stress protein expression, Molecular Modeling of key enzymes in Apoptosis

2. Teaching Activities :
Presently the Bioinformatics Centre (with limited facilities) is catering the needs of both theoretical and practical of Bioinformatics paper which was included in curriculum for the M.Sc. students of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology and Sericulture of this University. Research activities connected with Bioinformatics field for research scholars and faculty is carried out by the present limited facilities. Project Work for M.Sc/M.Tech/B.Tech. students was carried out in the present facility.

3. Collaborative Research:
The SKU DBT-BIF has collaboration with Dr. Sunil Kumar manna, CDFD, Bioinformatics Center at Biotechnology Department, Anna University, Chennai (Prof. P. Gautam) and Prof. Ramakumar, Bioinformatics Centre, IISc, Bangalore and has been supported by getting training for Research scholars and Faculty utilizing the commercial softwares available at Institutes
